A semiconductor memory device with a self-refresh-period generator and an operation method thereof are provided to generate a refresh signal with stable period, by decreasing the influence on process and an operation voltage. A fixed period signal generation unit(200) generates a fixed-period signal with fixed period without being influenced by variable temperature. A variable period signal generation unit(100) generates a variable-period signal with variable period according to temperature variation in response to a period generation signal. A clipping unit(300) outputs the variable-period signal as a refresh-period signal controlling to perform refresh operation, and outputs the fixed-period signal as the refresh-period signal at low temperature.
