PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium having a magnetically separated magnetic recording pattern on a non-magnetic substrate, the method having a remarkably simplified manufacturing step as compared with a conventional physical magnetic layer working type by eliminating its magnetic layer removing step, and the method being nearly free from contamination risk and providing high surface smoothness, and to provide a useful discrete track type magnetic recording medium having excellent head floating characteristics. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the magnetic recording medium is provided by which the magnetically separated magnetic recording pattern is formed by forming a magnetic layer on the non-magnetic substrate, then injecting atoms partially in the magnetic layer and non-magnetizing or non-crystallizing the atom injected part of the magnetic layer, wherein a step for injecting the atoms partially in the magnetic layer includes a step for applying an SOG (spin on glass) film as a resist onto the surface of the magnetic layer after forming the magnetic layer, partially removing the resist or thinning the film thickness of the resist and irradiating the surface thereof with the atoms to inject the atoms partially in the magnetic layer through the resist removed or thinned part.
