A negative electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte battery is provided to ensure good repeat charge and discharge, high capacity density, and excellent diffusivity of lithium ions, and to achieve quick charging and discharging. A negative electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte battery includes a metal-substituted lithium titanium oxide having a Ramsdellite-type structure represented by the formula of Li_[(16/7)-x]Ti_[(24/7)-y]M_yO_8, wherein M is at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Nb, Ta, Mo, and W, and x and y are a number in the range of 0<x<16/7 and 0<y<24/7, respectively. |
