A cryptographic challenge-response process (800) implements an authenticator process (810) and at least one requester process (831). Each of the authenticator process (810) and requester process (831) uses a cryptographic algorithm (904). The cryptographic algorithm (904) is iterated a number of times which allows the authenticator process (810) to successfully distinguish between a first and second requester. The first requester (103) implements the cryptographic algorithm (904) in hardware and has communications latencies. The second requester implements the cryptographic algorithm as software on a software processor.
