A method and an apparatus for determining the consistency of a suspension, in which a suspension located in a tank (1) is mixed substantially constantly by means of a agitator (2) arranged in the tank (1 ). By means of at least one measuring device (5a, 5b, 5c) the frequency and pressure or force of the pressure pulses produced by the agitator (2) are measured and the consistency of the suspension is determined on the basis of the same.
