A mobile terminal and its operation method are provided to allow a user to download a desired melody from an external device or a server and set it as a button sound melody to thus provide various button sound melodies and to output a predetermined button sound melody regardless of a manipulated key button. A controller(10) sequentially outputs melody codes of a pre-set button sound melody whenever a key button is manipulated. A button sound output unit(20) outputs sounds corresponding to the outputted melody codes. A memory(40) stores the button sound melody. The button sound melody is downloaded from one of a different external device and a server. The button sound melody has one of file format among MP3 and MMF. The melody code is inserted in the form of an XML(eXtensible Markup Language) file into meta data of the file format. The meta data can be replaced in the form of a WBXML(WAP(Wireless Application Protocol) Binary XML) file format. When the key button is manipulated, the button sound output unit outputs a corresponding sound of the pre-set button sound melody regardless of the manipulated key button.
