A system and a method for remote handset diagnostics are provided to enable a diagnostic unit to diagnose a handset manufactured by other manufacturers at a remote place, thereby reducing the service cost of a communication carrier and the manufacturer and improving customer satisfaction. A system for remote handset diagnostics(100) includes a plurality of handsets and a carrier system. Each of the handsets has a diagnostic engine. The carrier system has plural encoders and decoders. Each of the encoders and the decoders communicates with at least one diagnostic engine for obtaining diagnostic data. The carrier system includes an additional diagnostic unit for providing a common interface for the handset diagnostics. The diagnostic unit communicates with the encoders and the decoders to diagnose a remote handset.
