A sump for a dishwasher is provided to increase the periods of exchanging and of cleaning a filter by forming a soil chamber for collecting dirt according to the size of volume. A sump for a dishwasher comprises a washing pump(300) pumping washing water, a soil chamber(176), dividing passages(147,148), and a drain pump(250). The soil chamber collects dirt by flowing in portions of the washing water pumped by the washing pump, and has a first chamber(176a) collecting dirt with a relatively small volume and a second chamber(176b) collecting the dirt with a relatively large volume. The dividing passage connects the washing pump with the soil chamber, and has a first dividing passage(147) connected to the first chamber and a second dividing passage(148) connected to the second chamber. The drain pump communicated with the soil chamber drains the collected dirt with the washing water. The switching valves(210,220) placed at one portion of the dividing passages selectively supply the washing water pumped from the washing pump into the first diving passage and the second dividing passage.
