The device has an airbag (32) accommodated in a housing area (34) when the airbag is folded into a housing form. The airbag is unfolded by gas of a gas generator (31) when a folded condition is reversed. The airbag is folded in a direction opposite to a main development direction such that the airbag acts as an oblong body (44) that extends along a lateral development direction running perpendicular to the main development direction. A part of the body is folded in the lateral development direction to provide a folded section (45) such that the airbag is folded in the housing form.
