A sports memorabilia object comprises an authentication indicator (28) incorporated into and implanted within the object during the manufacturing process. The indicator (28) is not visible on the exterior of the item, but is adapted to be detected by a detection device to thereby authenticate the item. The authentication indicator (28) may comprise any element or device capable of having a unique identifier associated with the specific object into which the indicator (28) is incorporated and that is detectable by a detection device.
