PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the detection accuracy and reliability of an angle sensor for detecting the rotational phase of a rotary shaft in the valve operating mechanism of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The sensing part 66 of the angle sensor 65 for detecting the rotational phase of the control shaft 19 is supported by a holder 63 which is provided at the end of a cylinder head 11 covering a valve chamber equipped with the variable valve operating mechanism, and a cooling water passage 70a for flowing of cooling water is formed inside the holder 63. Even when the valve chamber has a high-temperature or low-temperature environment, cooling water passes through the holder 63, a large temperature change of the sensing part 66 is inhibited and the rotational phase of the control shaft 19 can be detected with high accuracy. As the sensing part 66 is supported on the side surface of the holder 63 opposite from the valve chamber, the sensing part 66 disliking for oil is separated from the valve chamber, and the reliability of the angle sensor to oil mist can be ensured even if a seal structure of the sensing part 66 is simplified.
