Improvements in methods of manufacturing security substrates

The method of manufacturing security substrate 16 comprises the steps of manufacturing an elongate fibrous tape 14 and fabricating at least one security feature 11 in or on the tape. A fibrous base substrate is formed by depositing fibres on to a support surface and the tape 14 is incorporated within the base substrate 15 to form the security substrate during the formation of the base substrate using a cylinder mould paper making machine. The tape may be formed by slitting a paper web formed on a cylinder mould machine. One surface of the tape may be fully or partially exposed. Images may be printed on the surface of the tape. The tape surface may be embossed or bear tactile inks or water marks. The tape may contain small perforations. The tape furnish may have a different colour form that of the base substrate 15. The base substrate may incorporate a partially embedded impermeable security thread.
