PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly safe antitumor agent having excellent antitumor effects. SOLUTION: The antitumor agent is characterized as comprising an acidic xylooligosaccharide having a uronic acid residue in the xylooligosaccharide molecule. The acidic xylooligosaccharide is a mixed composition of oligosaccharides having different degrees of polymerization of xylose. The average degree of polymerization is preferably 2.0-15.0. The acidic xylooligosaccharide is preferably obtained by enzymically and/or physico-chemically treating a lignocellulose material, affording a complex of a xylooligosaccharide component with a lignin component, then carrying out an acid hydrolysis treatment of the resultant complex, providing a xylooligosaccharide mixture and separating the xylooligosaccharide having at least one or more uronic acid residues in one molecule as a side chain from the resultant xylooligosaccharide mixture.
