PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric double layer capacitor having a high capacitance per volume with a low deterioration in capacitance even for a long period continuous applying of high voltage of not less than 3 V, that is, the high withstand voltage characteristic of not less than 3 V, especially improved withstand voltage characteristic of not less than 3.3 V. SOLUTION: As an active material of a polarizable electrode, an activated charcoal having a specific area of not less than 1,500 m<SP>2</SP>/g, a pore volume of not less than 0.5 cc/g, a proportion of the pore having a pore radius of less than 10Åbeing not more than 60%, and a proportion of the pore having a pore radius from 10 to 30Åbeing not less than 30% is used; and as an electrolytic solvent, a nonaqueous electrolyte including a sulfolane or its derivative is used.
