A method and compositions using an aqueous solution of thiourea dioxide to treat a contaminated site to reduce hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium and using a second solution of sodium hydroxide containing cationic polyacrylamide to fo rm a relatively impermeable gel in the contaminated site thereby fixing chromium to the extent that there should be no detectable ground water contamination.</SDOAB >
