PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic display element which is improved in display stability during repetitive driving. SOLUTION: The display element includes an electrochromic compound expressed by formula (1) between counter electrodes, colors the electrochromic compound during oxidation and performs such driving operation as to make the compound transparent during reduction. The display element is provided with a configuration allowing electronic injection not having memory property to a non-observation side electrode during coloration driving of the electrochromic compound. In the formula (1), R<SB>1</SB>denotes substituted or unsubstituted aryl group; R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>respectively denote hydrogen atoms or substituents.
