Transfer belt for cardboard- and papermaking machines has a support layer (2) with an inner base layer (3) and a functional layer (4) on the side which faces the cardboard or paper (7). This is made up of plates (8, 8.1, 8.2) mounted at right angles to the support layer and embedded in polymer (6). The ratio of the thickness of the plates to the distance between adjacent plates is 50:1 to 0.01:1, especially 4:1 to 1.5:1 and the belt has a permeability to air of 0 - 10000 cfm, especially 50 - 8000 cfm. An independent claim is included for a method for making the belt comprising embedding the plates in a polymer layer on the support.
