The method involves filling a tube and welding the tube by using a cross seam (5) in order to form a chain (2) by using a vertical tubular bag machine, where the chain comprises a series of bags (3) hanging together. The chain is separated from the tube within the cross seam, and the chain is brought into the package in a sidled form. The chain is dispensed directly into the package, where the packing is moved back and forth in a direction transverse to the alignment of the tube of the vertical tubular bag machine. An independent claim is also included for a device for forming a chain.
