<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve index management suitable for performing retrieval by values of a plurality of tags at high speed. <P>SOLUTION: Based on an index creation request that is given from the outside for instructing the creation of character string coupling index data, and specifying a tag to which the created character string coupling index data are given, a document management part 52 detects the tag specified by the index creation request from an XML document that is newly stored or is already stored in an XML document storage part 421.
