PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical material exhibiting high birefringence and having small birefringence change caused by external force, that is, a small absolute value of a photoelastic coefficient, and further to provide an optical material giving moldings having negative retardation in the thickness direction. SOLUTION: The resin composition for an optical material comprises a resin (a) having a positive photoelastic coefficient and a negative inherent birefringence and a resin (b) having a negative photoelastic coefficient and a negative inherent birefringence.
