A device for protecting a head of a passenger is provided to develop a head airbag and lift a head rest toward a roof panel by supplying high pressure gas from an inflator for developing the head airbag. A device for protecting a head of a passenger comprises a switching part for a vehicle overturn(50), a head rest(65), lifting unit for the head rest(67), a head airbag(63), an inflator(55), and an electron control unit(53). The switching part for the overturn accident is operated in an overturn accident of the vehicle. The head rest supports the head of the passenger. The head airbag is developed to protect the head of the passenger. The inflator is installed to supply high pressure gas to the head airbag. The electron control unit controls lifting of the head rest and operates the inflator if the switching part for a vehicle overturn is operated. The lifting unit for the head rest consists of a cylinder(69) formed on a seat of the vehicle, and a piston(71) formed at the lower end of the head rest and positioned inside the cylinder, and vertically moved by the high pressure gas generated from the inflator.
