PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antibacterial agent that is highly safe and gives a good feeling to use to solve the problem that the number of persons allergic to parabens used as an antibacterial agent for a cosmetic and the like is increasing and that alkyl glyceryl ethers or alkane diols as a substitute for parabens, give a bad feeling to use when incorporated into a cosmetic though they are highly safe for the human body. SOLUTION: The antibacterial agent includes a compound having an alkyl glyceryl ether skeleton containing (poly)alkylene glycol. The compound has antibacterial power equal or superior to parabens and gives a better feeling to use compared with alkyl glyceryl ethers or alkane diols, and therefore assures a user of use without uncomfortable feeling when incorporated with a cosmetic.
