An apparatus for homogenizing thermoplastics has a rotor 2 with a screw 3 in a housing 1 to which is attached, by means of a bayonet joint secured by gearing 7, 8 an extension 6. Knives 10 project radially inwardly of the housing extension 6 into grooves between circular ribs 4 on the rotor 2; the ribs 4 are intersected by helical grooves 5 which provide a passage for the materials. Each knife 10, see. also Fig. 3, has a lower part 10a with a frusto-conical seating surface 11, screwed to an upper part 10b which is externally threaded between squared ends. The lower square engages in a locking ring 12 having a toothed frusto-conical portion which engages a similar toothed seat 9. To adjust the knife 10, the lock-nut 12a is slackened, the locking ring 12 raised, and the nut 16 engaged under the yoke 14 to force the knife downwards off its seat 11. The knife may then be rotated by a lever applied to its squared upper extremity, see Fig. 5 (not shown). A scale and reference index may be attached to the yoke 14 and the knife.
