A liquid adhesive composition comprises, in a liquid vehicle, one or more resin components having film-forming and adhesion producing properties and being plasticized and/or polymerized to an extent whereby the cohesive film tensile strength and adhesiveness thereof for a surface to which the composition is first applied exceed, after removal of the liquid vehicle, the tackiness of the resin component or components, the tackiness, measured as peel strength by A.S.T.M. method D903-49, not exceeding 250 grams and being maintained for a prolonged period. Various resins, liquid vehicles and plasticizers are specified. The examples describe the following compositions: (1) a vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer, maleic anhydride modified glycerol abietic acid resin, epoxidized oil plasticizer, butyl phthalyl-butyl glycollate, ethyl acetate, acetone and methyl isobutyl ketone; (2) a mixture of hard and soft resins made from acrylic and methacrylic esters, benzyl butyl phthalate and methyl ethyl ketone; (3) a copolymer of vinyl and vinylidene chloride, diphenyl octyl phosphate and methyl ethyl ketone; (4) poly-n-butyl methacrylate, decyl butyl phthalate and methyl ethyl ketone; (5) poly-n-butyl methacrylate, a rosin derived adhesive, di-iso-octyl phthalate and methyl ethyl ketone; (6) ethyl cellulose, 2-biphenyl-diphenyl phosphate, isopropanol, toluene and butyl acetate; (7) a water emulsion of a soft filmforming and a medium hard film-forming polyacrylic resin. Also present in the compositions may be bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal agents, e.g. maleic anhydride, phenols, cresols, chlorinated phenols and thiochlorinated phenols.
