PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance zoom lens which is suitable for an electronic imaging element having a large number of pixels and achieves high variable magnification ratio. SOLUTION: This zoom lens has a first lens group G1 of a positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 of a negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 of s positive refractive power, a fourth lens group G4 of a positive refractive power, and a fifth lens group G5 of a negative refractive power, all sequentially arranged in this order from the object side along the optical axis. It changes the magnification from wide angle side W to the telescopic side T by moving the second lens group G2 and the fourth lens group G4 in the optical axis direction. The first lens group G1 has a front lenses G1f of a negative refractive power, an optical path bending element P for bending the optical path, and a rear lenses G1r of a positive refractive power sequentially arranged from the object side along the optical axis, and satisfies the predetermined conditional expression.
