The invention describes a method of driving a dialog system (1) comprising a number of stationary base units (B<SUB>1</SUB>, B<SUB>2</SUB>, B<SUB>3</SUB>) and a number of portable user interface units (H<SUB>1</SUB>, H<SUB>2</SUB>, H<SUB>3</SUB>), any of which can be connected to any of the stationary base units (B<SUB>1</SUB>, B<SUB>2</SUB>, B<SUB>3</SUB>), wherein a user (2) interacts with the dialog system (1) through a portable user interface unit (H<SUB>1</SUB>, H<SUB>2</SUB>, H<SUB>3</SUB>) connected to a stationary base unit (B<SUB>1</SUB>, B<SUB>2</SUB>, B<SUB>3</SUB>) using an input/output modality (200, 210, 220, 230). The input/output modality (200, 210, 220, 230) utilises an algorithmic model, and a number of adaptable algorithmic models (M, M<SUB>1</SUB>, M<SUB>2</SUB>, ..., M<SUB>n</SUB>) utilised by the input/output modality (200, 210, 220, 230) are assigned to the stationary base units (B<SUB>1</SUB>, B<SUB>2</SUB>, B<SUB>3</SUB>) and/or to the portable user interface units (H<SUB>1</SUB>, H<SUB>2</SUB>, H<SUB>3</SUB>). The stationary base unit (B<SUB>1</SUB>, B<SUB>2</SUB>, B<SUB>3</SUB>) and/or the portable user interface unit (H<SUB>1</SUB>, H<SUB>2</SUB>, <SUB>H3</SUB>) used by user (2) to interact with the dialog system (1) is detected, and an adaptable algorithmic model (M, M<SUB>1</SUB>, M<SUB>2</SUB>, ..., M<SUB>n</SUB>) for the interaction is allocated to the input/output modality (200, 210, 220, 230) according to the stationary base unit (B<SUB>1</SUB>, B<SUB>2</SUB>, B<SUB>3</SUB>) and/or the portable user interface unit (H<SUB>1</SUB>, H<SUB>2</SUB>, H<SUB>3</SUB>) used by the user (2) for interaction with the dialog system (1).
