PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a screen where the display of black in a projection image can be made fine, and color unevenness is hard to be generated in the projection image. SOLUTION: The data of the spectral characteristics upon display of black in a projector body 14 are beforehand measured, and, in such a manner that the measured color is compensated and rides on a blackbody locus, a subtractive color mixture compensating the data is calculated from an additive color mixture in an optical modulation section 25 by the well-known transformation formula. In this way, it can be judged, if what kind of dyestuff is chosen as a PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) film 42b in a polarizer 42, the coloring of the optical modulation section 25 can be compensated by the coloring of the PVA film 42b. When the PVA film 42b is colored with the dyestuff corresponding to the above subtractive color mixture, a black display projected from the projector body 14 on a transmission type screen 18 is controlled to black of pitch-dark.
