The lifter has a force transmission device (7) transmitting force from an electric motor (3) to a windowpane (4). A force detecting device (8) detects the force, and a control device (2) e.g. program-controlled microprocessor, controls the motor and the device (8). The control device is designed such that the motor is activated automatically and the force is transmitted automatically to the windowpane, when the detected force lies above a threshold value, where the force is directed downwardly toward the pane when the detected force is aligned downwardly with respect to a vertical portion.
