PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder injection type spark ignition internal combustion engine capable of suitably attaining uniform combustion by surely making a tumble stream strong without requiring an intake control valve. SOLUTION: The cylinder injection type spark ignition internal combustion engine is provided with a fuel injection valve 1 arranged almost at the center of the upper part of the cylinder, an ignition plug 2 arranged near the fuel injection valve on the intake valve side, and a cavity 5a formed on a top surface of a piston 5 in order to suppress damping of the tumble stream T going down on an exhaust valve side in the cylinder and going up on the intake valve side. The tumble stream is made strong by fuel F injected to the exhaust valve side of a cylinder bore by the fuel injection valve near the bottom dead center in the intake stroke in uniform combustion, and a squish area is formed between a cavity top surface A except for the cavity and a cylinder head.
