A tamper evident marker either in label form or directly integrated with a package, has a random distribution identifying pattern, and a memory chip, storing identification information on the pattern. Thus a two tier system of protection may provide more overall protection. The random pattern may comprise light reflective beads or particles randomly scattered into a plastic substrate. The encoding of the random pattern might include details of the light reflective and refractive properties of the particles. Also disclosed is an anti-counterfeit packaging with a memory chip containing information relating to a further identifier.
