Internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle comprises a fuel conveying device (11) feeding fuel from a fuel tank (10) via a high-pressure fuel system to the engine~s cylinders and via a low-pressure fuel system to an exhaust gas purification system. Fuel is fed via a flow line (14) to a dosing device (12) of a valve (13) of the exhaust gas purification system. Excess fuel not required by the dosing device is fed back to the fuel tank via a return line (15). The return line has a damping volume (19) for controlling pressure peaks at the dosing device. Preferred Features: The damping volume controls pressure peaks at an inlet (23) to the dosing device.
