PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iris authentication system effectively guiding a user in a timely fashion by using voice guidance. SOLUTION: The iris authentication system, which is provided with a portable terminal having a photographing means for photographing an eye image of a user and an authentication device 200 for collating an iris code generated from image information received from the portable terminal with a registered iris code to authenticate the user, comprises: a motion detecting part 104 for detecting its own stationary state and outputting a detection signal; a stationary determining part 105 for determining whether the apparatus is stationary on the basis of the detection signal; an operation control part 109 for operating the photographing means when the stationary determining part determines that the apparatus is stationary; a distance measuring part 106 for measuring a distance from the apparatus to the eyes of the user on the basis of the image information acquired by the photographing means; a voice output part 107 for outputting voice guidance for guiding the user so as to be within the coverage of authentication; and a transmitting part 108 for transmitting the image information acquired by the photographing to the authentication device.
