A liquid lubricating composition contains a major proportion by weight of a neutral ester of (a) one or more polyhydric alcohols selected from neopentyl glycol, 2-methyl-2-propyl-1:3-propane diol, trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol, and (b) one or more aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having 2-10 carbon atoms, e.g. pelargonic acid, 2-ethyl hexanoic acid, n-heptanoic acid, n-octanoic acid, iso-octanoic acid, n-decanoic acid and propionic acid, said composition also containing 0,001-0,15% by weight of one or more free aliphatic di- or tricarboxylic acids having 4-12 carbon atoms. The compositions may be thickened with a minor proportion of a polyester derived from polyhydric alcohols and dicarboxylic acids, or a complex ester derived from polyhydric alcohols, dicarboxylic acids and either monohydric alcohols or monocarboxylic acids. Suitable alcohols and acids for preparing the polyesters and complex esters are specified. The composition may also contain phenothiazine.ALSO:Neutral esters are prepared from neopentyl glycol, 2-methyl-2-propyl-1:3-propane diol, trimethylol ethane and propane and pentaerythritol and monocarboxylic acids, e.g. pelargonic, 2-ethyl hexanoic, n-heptanoic, n-octanoic, isooctanoic, n-decanoic and propionic acids, e.g. 1:1:1-trimethylol propane, n-octanoic acid heated with toluene and an activated crystalline sodium alumino-silicate (molecular sieve) catalyst, and are used together with polyesters from polyhydric alcohols and dicarboxylic acids alone or with monohydric alcohols or monocarboxylic acids as above or also sebacic, azelaic, adipic, commercial iso-sebacic, succinic, glutacic, sebacic, butane-1:2:4-tricarboxylic, cyclohexane-1:3-dicarboxylic acids, and 2-ethyl hexanol, isooctanol, 2:2:4-trimethylpentanol, 3:5:5-trimethylhexanol and isotridecanol, e.g. neopentyl glycol and azelaic acid, as lubricating compositions. |
