Chlorohydrins are dehydrochlorinated to give the corresponding epoxy compounds by contacting an aqueous solution of a chlorohydrin with a strongly basic anion-exchange resin, an aqueous solution of the dehydrochlorinated compound being obtained and the resin being regenerated by washing with an aqueous solution of an alkaline agent followed by rinsing with water. The preferred anionexchange resins are polystyrene-based resins having active quaternary ammonium groups. The regeneration is advantageously effected by the circulation of an aqueous solution of caustic soda in contact with the chlorinated resin. Examples are given of the conversion of glycerol monochlorhydrin to glycidol, diglycerol chlorohydrins to the corresponding epoxy compounds and styrene chlorohydrin to 1,2-epoxy ethylbenzene. These products may be hydrated to give glycerol, diglycerin and phenylglycol respectively. |
