<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element capable of visualizing good two-color display of white and black colors even when observing a picture from an oblique direction. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is provided with a first polarizing plate 1, a first retardation plate 2, an STN type liquid crystal cell 3, a compensation layer 4, a second retardation plate 5 and a second polarizing plate 6. The first retardation plate 2 is a 1/4 wavelength plate and is arranged between the first polarizing plate 1 on the observer side and the liquid crystal cell 3. A second retardation plate 5 is also a 1/4 wavelength plate and is arranged between the second polarizing plate 6 and the compensation layer 4. A twist angle of the compensation layer 4 is same as that of the STN type liquid crystal cell 3. Further, the direction of twist for the alignment direction in the liquid crystal cell 3 is inverse to the direction of twist for the alignment direction in the compensation layer 4. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
