A VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol) device using a multi-mode dongle and a method are provided to connect the multi-mode dongle having a predetermined wireless communication network to a portable terminal in a shadow area out of a communication area of the portable terminal by performing a VoIP service through the portable terminal. A communication port(210) is configured for connection with a portable terminal. A wireless communication network sensing unit(240) senses a usable wireless communication network in a shadow area out of a communication area of the portable terminal. A wireless communication unit(220) carries out a VoIP service by using a predetermined wireless communication method corresponding to the sensed wireless communication network. A storage(230) stores VoIP software and information for user authentication when the VoIP service is carried out.
