A method of extracting and purifying corosolic acid from a material containing corosolic acid is provided to obtain high-purity corosolic acid efficiently by a successive process containing an extraction, chromatography, precipitation and high performance liquid chromatography. A material containing corosolic acid is extracted with an organic solvent such as C1-5 lower alcohol and concentrated. The obtained solid material is melted in an organic solvent and subjected to normal phase chromatography using one or more solvents selected from the group consisting of chloroform, methanol, dichloromethane, benzene, acetone, hexane and ethyl acetate to obtain an active fraction which is then subjected to reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography. The organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of ethanol, methanol and acetone. The material containing corosolic acid contains a plant body, callus, cell or cell suspension cultures of a plant selected from the group consisting of Lagerstroemia speciosa, Eriobotrya japonica, Ternstroemia gymnanthera, Crataegus pinnatifida and Tiarella polyphylla. |
