PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take appropriate countermeasures against heat for a step-up circuit without causing malfunction such as increase in cost in an ignition device for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The step-up circuit 15 with direct current from a direct voltage source part 12 supplied as boosting primary current starts its step-up action at timing when a predetermined period is passed through after ignition, and charge is stored in an ignition capacitor 24 during a period when outputting pulse-like high voltage by step-up action. Spark discharge is generated in an ignition plug 27 by synchronizing the stored charge of the ignition capacitor 24 with the rotation of an engine and inducing discharge. A microcomputer 22 executes control to delay step-up action start timing after ignition when the output voltage of the direct voltage source part 12 calculated based on the divided voltage of a resistive voltage dividing circuit 31 is a reference value or more.
