PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform highly precise automatic white balance control by performing white balance detection using the results of difference-based achromatic detection and ratio-based achromatic detection. SOLUTION: Division processing of R/G and division processing of B/G are performed for each picture element on a synchronized RGB image signal before applying a gain of white balance. Whether or not the quotient data of R/G are within the limits of maximum and minimum thresholds of R/G specifications is determined, and at the same time whether or not the quotient data of B/G are within the limits of maximum and minimum thresholds of B/G specification is determined. With an AND of these R/G specification determination and B/G specification determination results as a determination output, the ratio-based achromatic detection is performed.
