PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol-aldehyde resin which can be used as a curing agent for epoxy resins and has a small free bisphenol compound content and a narrow mol.wt. distribution, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This new phenol-aldehyde resin is characterized in that the content of a free bisphenol compound in the phenol-aldehyde resin is≤5 wt.%, and a mol.wt. distribution represented by Mw/Mn is≤2.0.
