<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical gyroscope which is easily manufactured and consumes lower amounts of power. <P>SOLUTION: The optical gyroscope comprises: a substrate; an annular optical waveguide (core layer 13a) and an optical coupler (core layer 13b) which are formed on the substrate; and a semiconductor optical amplifier (semiconductor optical amplifier 33) and an optical detector (photodiode 34) which are disposed on the substrate. The semiconductor optical amplifier 33 is coupled with the core layer 13a so as to form an annular optical path 41 along with the core layer 13a. The core layer 13a and the semiconductor optical amplifier 33 generate a first laser beam which is propagated clockwise in the optical path 41, and a second laser beam which is propagated counterclockwise in the optical path 41. The core layer 13b extracts the first laser beam and the second laser beam from the core layer 13a and superimposes one laser beam on the other laser beam. The photodiode 34 is used to observe a beat signal arising from the superimposed first laser beam and second laser beam. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT</p> |
