<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a visual field angle of a VA mode liquid crystal display element. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is provided with a liquid crystal cell provided with a liquid crystal layer interposed between a pair of substrates whose surfaces are respectively subjected to vertical alignment treatment and comprising a liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy and a pair of polarizing plates sandwiching the liquid crystal cell and disposed so that an absorption axis of one polarizing plate and an absorption axis of the other polarizing plate form 90°±5° crossing angle. A layer structure which has a refractive index elliptical body and wherein relation of n<SB>x</SB>>n<SB>y</SB>=n<SB>z</SB>is satisfied between principal refractive indices n<SB>x</SB>, n<SB>y</SB>and n<SB>z</SB>in directions of axes x, y and z orthogonal to each other is provided between at least one of the pair of polarizing plates and the liquid crystal cell. The refractive index elliptical body is formed so as to be inclined at >0° and <90° angle to the thickness direction of the layer structure. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
