PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical information recording material with which various characteristics such as photoinduced birefringence, long term preservation stability and repeated durability in holographic optical information recording are improved, and to provide an optical information recording medium using the same. SOLUTION: The photoresponsive recording material is composed of a copolymer having, at least on either the main chain or the side chain, a structural unit containing an azo moiety and a tolane moiety expressed by formulae (1) and (2) as photoresponsive moieties (wherein, Ar<SP>1</SP>to Ar<SP>5</SP>denote a benzene ring or heteroaromatic ring structure; R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>5</SP>denote a hydrogen atom or a substitutional group bonded to the above ring structure being same or different, respectively; m, n and s to u denote the number of the bonds thereof; X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>4</SP>are a terminal group or a linking group, and at least one of the respective formulae is linked to the main chain or the side chain of the copolymer as a linking group; and the terminal group is a hydrogen atom or a substitutional group).
