An automatic input mode conversion device in a portable terminal and a method are provided to recognize that the current location refers to a limited zone by receiving an expansion header indicative of the limited zone, and to display a limited zone notification message together with a warning sound, so as to automatically convert the current mode into a touch screen input mode. A GPS(Global Positioning System) location information calculator(608) analyzes a received satellite signal to calculate a location, and compares stored location information on a limited zone with the calculated location to notify a controller(600) whether the current area is the limited zone. If the current area is within the limited zone, the controller displays a message indicative of the limited zone together with a warning sound, and automatically converts the current mode into a touch screen input mode.
