DIGITAL CONTENTS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

A device and a method for managing digital contents are provided to block unauthorized copy or distribution of the digital contents while keeping a present contents format without changing the format of the digital contents into a new format applying DRM(Digital Rights Management). A source peer transfers the digital contents to a target peer with information during a rental period of the digital contents. The source peer stores management information during a contents use prohibition period and use right recovery according to the rental period. The source peer prohibits use of the digital contents during the rental period and permits the use of the digital contents if a use right is recovered after the rental period according to the management information. One of the source and target peer has one of an ownership or the use right of the digital contents during the rental period.
