Disclosed are pyrazolopyrimidinones of formulae (IA) and (IB), process for their preparation, their use for the manufacture of human and animal medicaments, and pharmaceutical compositions containing them. The invention also relates to intermediate compounds of formulae (IIA), (IIB), (IVA), (IVB), (IXA), (IXB) for preparing said pyrazolopyrimidinones and to processes for preparing said intermediates. Pyrazolopyrimidinones of formulae (IA) and (IB) are selective inhibitors of type 5 phosphodiesterase (PDE-5) and have utility thereof in the manufacture of medicaments for treating male erectile dysfunction, female sexual dysfunction and other medical conditions for which a selective PDE-5 inhibitor is indicated.
