POLARIZING FILM AND MANUFACTURING METHOD FOR THE SAME

A surface-modified polarizing film and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to prevent transmittance of the light generated from a backlight unit from being decreased and to improve transmittance only by irradiating ultraviolet rays on the polarizing film to adsorb iodine or to be dyed. A polarizing film is produced by applying iodine or dichromatic dyes on a polyvinyl alcohol base film having the surface modified by irradiating ultraviolet rays. Polarization efficiency of the polarizing film is 22 to 55% and transmittance is 74 to 99.9%. The surface of the polyvinyl alcohol base film is modified by irradiating the ultraviolet rays of 0.53 to 42.4J/cm^2 while ozone exists. In a polarizing film manufacturing method, iodine compounds are adsorbed or dichromatic dyes are applied before, during, or after uniaxially drawing the polyvinyl alcohol base film and then, the polyvinyl alcohol base film is fixed in a cross-linking agent aqueous solution. The surface of the film is modified after dyeing and before drawing the polyvinyl alcohol base film.
