摘要 <p>Provided is a multifuel internal combustion engine for improving an engine performance, a fuel consumption performance and an emission performance at a heavy-load running time, in a well-balanced manner. The various-fuel internal combustion engine comprises fuel characteristic detecting means for detecting an ignitability index (Pc) and a volatility index (Pv), which are indexed on the fuel ignitabilities and volatilities of at least two kinds of fuels (F1 and F2) of different natures in a combustion chamber (CC). Further comprised is combustion mode setting means for setting the combustion mode to a stoichiometric compression spontaneous-ignition diffusion-combustion mode, when the ignitability index (Pc) and the volatility index (Pv) are at or higher than an ignitability decision reference value (Pc1) and a volatility decision reference value (Pv1), at which the ignitability index (Pc) and the volatility index (Pv) satisfy such excellent ignitability and volatility, respectively, as are suited for a stoichiometric compression spontaneous-ignition diffusion-combustion mode, and when the running condition is a heavy load. Still further comprised is combustion control executing means for running the engine in the combustion mode set by the combustion mode setting means.</p>
