PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging device and a display element which perform a suitable light shield operation with avoiding or checking the enlargement of the apparatus. SOLUTION: A plurality of light shields 32 composed of light shield members 34 made of an electrically driven polymer material deformable with an applied electric field, upper and lower electrodes 35, 36 attached to the upsides and the undersides of the members are mounted at positions away from light receiving regions of photo diodes 16 on an insulation layer 31. Upon need of shielding the incidence of a light on each pixel, a light shield controller 29 applies a voltage to the electrodes 35, 36 so that the potential on one of the electrodes 35, 36 is higher than the other. This deforms the shield member 34 shrinking in the thickness direction and expanding in approximately perpendicular direction thereto, resulting in that the right and left ends of the adjacent shield members 34 contact to make a light shield state with shutting off the incidence of the light on each pixel.
