The device has a controlling apparatus for increasing intensity of current flowing through a coil device of an electromagnetic actuator from an average value to another average value. An output stage has current intensity-threshold components designed, such that a threshold-exceeding signal is produced during exceeding of a preset current intensity-threshold between the average values. The apparatus is controlled by the signal, such that a preset holding time is maintained and the intensity is reduced from the latter average value to the former average value. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electromagnetic actuator.
